The best dry herb vaporizers of 2015
2015 was another good year for herbal vaporizers with some new releases and upgrades on established devices. Vaping has really started to come into its own lately as the technology is continually improved and refined. These developments have not only benefitted consumers in terms of choice but as competition heats up prices have also started to level out. However, the huge variety of models on offer can prove overwhelming for some. Based on our own and customer reviews, we have compiled this short list of the two highest ranked dry herb vapes, in each category, for 2015.
These super portable devices have recently exploded in popularity and come in a wide range of styles and colors. Slim, discreet, affordable, and easy to use, vape pens are the perfect companion for raw herb lovers who like to vape on the go.
Atmos R2 – by Atmos Nation
One of the most widely known and respected brands, Atmos made a name for themselves for producing reliable, high quality products. Specializing in portable and pen vaporizers, they have led the way from the beginning with their innovative designs. This tradition has continued with the introduction of the R2. The Atmos R2 is an improved version of the highly successful AtmosRAW or RX model. Besides some relatively minor cosmetic changes, it features a larger anodized heating chamber and a more powerful coil. Anodization makes for a more durable heating chamber as well as producing better quality vapor. Along with its more diminutive counterpart, the Atmos Junior, the R2 is undoubtedly one of the top dry herb vaporizer pens of 2015.
Snoop Dogg | G Pen Ground Material – by Grenco Science
With an endorsement from the inimitable rapper and weed connoisseur, Snoop Dogg, this vape has got to be good, right? Grenco Science are another prominent manufacturer, focusing exclusively on the vape pen market. Their G Pro and G Pen brands have already earned them a solid reputation from within the vaping community for their stylish design and cutting edge technology. Of particular interest to the dry herb enthusiast is the fact that this model is designed specifically for use with ground material, hence the name. Designed by Snoop Dogg himself, this vape is made from quality materials, including glass and stainless steel, and comes with a 1 year warranty covering failure of any electrical component.
Although not quite as portable or discreet as vape pens, these handheld or pocket vaporizers offer superior functionality and battery life in what is still a relatively small form factor. Of the many contenders for the title, the following two get our vote for this year’s best portable dry herb vaporizers.
Mighty – by Storz & Bickel
Mighty by name and mighty by nature; at over $300 this vape is definitely not the cheapest vaporizer around but backed by German engineering and the same company that produces the legendary Volcano desktop model, it is far from overpriced. Measuring 5.5″ x 3.2″ and weighing 0.5lbs, the Mighty is large by portable vape standards, but the extra bulk is a trade-off for longer battery life which is about 90 minutes. If you’re looking for something truly portable you might want to consider its smaller sibling, the Crafty. Both these vapes offer exceptional build quality and performance.
The black outer case is made from a durable grooved plastic helping to keep it cool and making it easier to grip. The mouthpiece swivels and folds neatly away when not in use, adding to the desirable look and feel of this unit. After powering up, the Mighty takes about 90 seconds to reach operating temperature which can be viewed on the digital display together with the battery gauge. The dual conduction/convection heating technology actually compares favorably with most desktop models in terms of performance. Some cool features of this vape include a vibration alarm and a micro USB charger.
Pax 2 – by Ploom
This herbal vape almost needs a category of its own and is aptly referred to by the Pax company themselves as a “compact” vaporizer. In terms of size and shape it falls somewhere between a standard portable device and a vaporizer pen. So, it could be argued the Pax 2 gives you the best of both worlds by combining the portability of a pen vape with the superior performance and functionality of a typical handheld device.
The Pax 2 is the successor to the original Pax. It has a slimmer profile and a smart looking polished aluminium case. It also features a redesigned mouthpiece, deeper oven for more even heating of your herb, and longer battery life. This vape is engineered to exacting quality control standards using state of the art technology and materials including a medical grade vapor path and kapton heater element. The Pax 2 also comes with a massive 10 year warranty and excellent customer support.
Another noteworthy addition to this model is the lip sensor. This adjust the temperature of the heating element by detecting the presence of your lips on the mouthpiece to produce a more consistent draw.
These larger, fully featured units provide the ultimate dry herb vaping experience. Investing in a good quality desktop model gives you awesome vapor producing capabilitities, more consistent draws, and a smoother taste.
Volcano – by Storz & Bickel
If you know anything about vaping then the Volcano needs no introduction. This distinctive, volcano shaped unit has become an icon of the vape world. With a history dating all the way back to 2001, it still rates as one of the best vaporizers of 2015. The Volcano is currently available in two variations: the Volcano Classic and the Volcano Digit. The former has an adjustable dial for temperature control while the latter features a digital temperature control and display system. However, in terms of performance, the only real advantage the Volcano Digit has is the ability to more precisely control the unit’s temperature setting. You also have a choice of valve kits: The Easy Valve or the Solid Valve. The Easy Valve kit is a disposable system that comes with five valves preassembled with bags attached. The Solid Valve kit, on the other hand, can be reused by detaching the bag from the valve and replacing it with a new one. Although slightly more complicated to use, the Solid Valve is more economical and allows you to use bags of any size. Reliable and easy to operate and maintain, the Volcano is an excellent choice, especially if you prefer balloon style vapes.
Cloud EVO – by VapeXhale
The last spot in this roundup was a close contest and very nearly went to the Plenty vaporizer (yet another Storz & Bickel model) but the VapeXhale Cloud EVO won through in the end. Since its launch this superbly designed and innovative vape has been receiving rave reviews all over the internet. What we, and most other users, like most about the Cloud EVO is the unique (for a vaporizer) delivery system and the dense, clean tasting vapor it produces. In fact, in this reviewer’s humble opinion, at least, the quality of the vapor is second to none. The device is quite compact for a desktop vape. The two main components are the base unit and Hydratube delivery system. Unlike most other desktop vapes that use either balloons or whips, the Hydratube more closely resembles a bong which many of you will find familiar. As the name suggests, the Hydratube uses water diffusion to filter and condition the vapor although a waterless mouthpiece is also available for those who prefer dry vapor. The much praised smoothness of the vapor produced by the Cloud EVO is due to the all glass vapor path, as well as to the Perpetuheat heating system. Glass is an extremely inert and non-reactive material ideally suited to the purpose while the Perpetuheat system employs a complex algorithm to maintain the heat at an optimal level regardless of airflow.
